FREE TO PLAY ist ein Dokumentarfilm in Spielfilmlänge. Er porträtiert drei professionelle Videospieler aus aller Welt, die am ersten Dota 2 International Turnier teilnehmen, um den Preis in Höhe von einer Million Dollar zu erringen. Dendi wurde in Lemberg, Ukraine, geboren und fing schon in sehr jungem Alter mit Computerspielen an, nachdem sein älterer Bruder einen PC von deren Großmutter erhalten hatte. Dendi hat wie bei allen seinen Hobbies wie Musik und Tanzen auch das Spielen von Videospielen leicht erlernt, und stach sehr schnell weit über seine Altersklasse hinweg hervor. Die erstaunliche Geschicklichkeit, die er durch viele Klavierstunden erhalten hat, war schon bald in örtlichen Gaming-Turnieren von Vorteil, bei welchen er einen Ruf als dominanter und kreativer Spieler erhielt. Dendi war zwar erfolgreich bei anderen Spielen, aber als er Dota entdeckte, wusste er, dass er seine Bestimmung gefunden hatte.

Falls Sie die Entwicklung von Dota in Singapur verfolgt haben, sollten Sie mit dem Namen Benedict “HyHy” Lim vertraut sein. HyHy wurde 1990 in Singapur geboren und sein Aufstieg zur Prominenz begann als er und seine Teammitglieder Singapur in den Asian Cyber Games 2007 vertreten haben. Im folgenden Jahr gewann er die Electronic Sports Weltmeisterschaft und seitdem wurde seine Arbeitseinstellung zur Säule in der Dota 2 Community. HyHy ist bekannt dafür, dass er immer seine Meinung sagt und Diskussionen nie aus dem Weg geht. Er hat sich als einer der ehrgeizigsten und vielseitigsten Spieler des professionellen Gamings einen Namen gemacht.

Clinton “Fear” Loomis, einer der wohl besten Dota 2 Spieler aus der westlichen Hemisphäre, hat immer schon einen schweren Stand gehabt. Durch die Isolation als US-Amerikanischer Spieler ist er es gewohnt, die Balance zwischen Können und hart erarbeiteter Erfahrung zu seinen Gunsten zu nutzen, um auf höchstem Niveau anzutreten. Er wurde im Jahre 1988 geboren und durch seine Arbeitsmoral und sein Engagement hat er es von Medford, Oregon bis nach Europa, China und dann letztendlich zum Dota 2 The International geschafft, dem Turnier mit dem höchsten Preisgeld in der Geschichte der Computerspiele.
